It is best suited for pupils who already possess an appreciation of the basics and wish to progress to the next level of proficiency.

Each week the challenges become greater.  They will be introduced to the work of artists who have broken new ground and challenged to emulate them. In the process Brian will demonstrate each phase of the painting whilst students follow him stroke for stroke until the painting is completed. He will demonstrate the correct value, the correct hue and the correct shape. He will do this also at the correct speed.

The emphasis is on the Alla Prima method which is the way to preserve an unadulterated picture surface.

Big brushes (preferably one stroke flats) and two pallets are required in order to preserve the quality of the picture surface.

I’ve been attending Brian’s watercolour class for about three years now. Before joining, I had only dabbled in watercolor through YouTube tutorials, but Brian’s approach is on a completely different level — professional, structured, and rooted in traditional technique.

His teaching style is very old-school in the best possible way, helping students develop solid habits from the ground up. He’s famous for his “one stroke only” rule, which trains you to be precise and prevents your paintings from becoming overworked or muddy. 

We explore a wide range of subjects, so every week feels fresh and inspiring. The group itself is also very welcoming and friendly, making the class both enjoyable and motivating.

I always look forward to my Wednesday afternoons — they’ve become one of the most fulfilling parts of my week. I highly recommend Brian’s class to anyone interested in developing their art skills and deepening their appreciation for watercolour painting.

I have learnt about other artists and their styles, both NZ and overseas. Painting with Friends Untutored 

FRI AFT OR EVE | 5 WEEKS | 24 APRIL - 22 MAY OR 29 MAY - 26 JUNE. This class is mainly focused on handbuilding techniques. In this term class, you will learn all the basics of how to create without a potter’s wheel. From wedging clay, pinching, coiling, and slab building, to refining your forms and glazing them yourself. You will learn to construct the shapes of mugs, bowls & sculptural vessels, gain knowledge from the beginning to the finish, and take home your own ceramic creation! Beginners and returning students welcome.

Wheel-Throwing For Adults with Livia Mu 

Looking for a creative escape to kick off your weekend? Our Friday Craft Club is the perfect spot for makers aged 16-25 to hang out, share ideas, and get some work done on their latest projects.

Whether you're into upcycling, scrapbooking, embroidery, or model building, come vibe with other young creatives in a relaxed, low-pressure space.

## Materials & Tools

- BYO Project: Bring your own base materials and consumables (fabrics, beads, sketchbook, etc.).
- Our Gear: You’ll have full access to the Centre’s tools during the session. ( Cricut Maker, Chompsaw, Heat Press, Hot Glue Guns, Gelli Transfer Pad, Silk screen *for use with stencils* Screen-printing Squeegees.)
- Top-Ups: Running low on supplies? We’ll have a small selection of consumables available for purchase if you need an extra bit of material, vinyl, glue, or paper!

Ever fascinated by the scene of the potter’s wheel work? Come to joint us for a term of wheel-throwing, and try it out yourself! In this term class, you will learn all the basics of how to use a potter’s wheel. From wedging clay, centering the clay onto the wheel, throwing, trimming, applying underglaze, and glazing it yourself. You will gain knowledge from the beginning to the finish, and take home your own ceramic creation! Beginners and returning student welcome.

Wheel Throwing Development for Young Adults with Livia Mu 

Using drawing and painting as the vehicle for storytelling, you will further develop skills in drawing and colour theory to create beautiful and expressive pieces. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride into your imagination! In each class, students will receive a fun and open prompt to begin creating their own work. Emmie offers individualized guidance throughout her classes to help students grow and improve their work

If you can draw a stick man, you can learn how to draw people! In this class, we will gather ideas and create stories through artwork. You will learn to transform simple lines and shapes into expressive characters and colourful scenes. Together, we'll practice fundamental drawing techniques and apply them to fun, hands-on creative projects. You'll be able to draw your own unique stories with confidence and creativity. Join us and start imagining—your artistic journey begins here!

Crafty Clay Creations with Sylvia Sinel 

This is a super fun introductory class for a broad variety of crafting mediums. You will learn basic techniques for 3D construction whilst pushing your creative boundaries, the sky is your limit. Come along if you love to craft!

Craft Club with Emmie Wu  

We have multiple options to choose from for our one day clay workshops with Jin! You can select from either handbuilding or wheel throwing sessions. These sessions include 2 hours of making and 30 minutes of clean up time.

- Hand Building Workshop

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of hand building while creating your own unique creatures or functional pieces such as cups and plates for everyday use.

- Wheel Throwing Workshop

Bring your apron and enthusiasm! Whether you’re new or have some experience in wheel throwing, all are welcome. Let’s explore the potter’s wheel and get creative.

You will receive a small allocation of clay to use in your single session workshop. All materials, glazes and firing are included in the course costs when purchasing a clay class at M.A.C.

&nbsp;

Ceramic / Clay pieces can take up to a month to dry and be fired in the kiln. You will receive an email with a collection deadline when your pieces have been fired and are ready to be picked up.

**SAT** AGES: 13+ & ADULTS Join Jin and discover the joy of working with clay in our fun series of one day workshops! You can join either handbuilding or wheel throwing.

Let your imagination run wild with clay! Join tutor Jin In this fun and creative class, where young young artists will explore hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab building to create imaginative figures, small sculptures, and unique clay objects.  Students will also have the opportunities to try the potter’s wheel. All materials are supplied by the centre.

Come and create your very own functional breakfast set from scratch! In this fun class, you’ll learn how to shape clay into a cereal bowl or a sturdy mug, plus a matching plate for your toast. We’ll show you how to build your pieces and add cool patterns or textures to make your set one-of-a-kind.
