This course focuses on traditional drawing methods, exploring still life, cast, portrait, and figure drawing through careful observation and structured techniques. In this class, we will learn concepts and techniques that will help us improve our portrait painting skills, using the Old Masters’ works as references. We will discuss concepts such as light, form, colour, and block-in strategies for accurate proportions & will study the characteristics of the different features and how they relate to the whole of the head. We will practice two portraits -- one in grisaille (monochrome), where there will be a strong focus on tone and form, and another using a limited palette, where we will introduce colour concepts. There is also the option to work on a personal portrait if you would prefer that to an Old Master work.

*Suitable for beginners with some painting experience or intermediate artists wishing to refine their portrait techniques.*

## WEDNESDAY 1-4PM. LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED.

 **Prior to finalizing enrollment, You must email examples of your artworks to [info@mairnagiarts.co.nz](mailto:info@mairnagiarts.co.nz)**  This class is not for beginners. It is best suited for pupils who already possess an appreciation of the basics and wish to progress to the next level of proficiency.

Each week the challenges become greater.  They will be introduced to the work of artists who have broken new ground and challenged to emulate them. In the process Brian will demonstrate each phase of the painting whilst students follow him stroke for stroke until the painting is completed. He will demonstrate the correct value, the correct hue and the correct shape. He will do this also at the correct speed.

The emphasis is on the Alla Prima method which is the way to preserve an unadulterated picture surface.

Big brushes (preferably one stroke flats) and two pallets are required in order to preserve the quality of the picture surface.

I’ve been attending Brian’s watercolour class for about three years now. Before joining, I had only dabbled in watercolor through YouTube tutorials, but Brian’s approach is on a completely different level — professional, structured, and rooted in traditional technique.

His teaching style is very old-school in the best possible way, helping students develop solid habits from the ground up. He’s famous for his “one stroke only” rule, which trains you to be precise and prevents your paintings from becoming overworked or muddy. 

We explore a wide range of subjects, so every week feels fresh and inspiring. The group itself is also very welcoming and friendly, making the class both enjoyable and motivating.

I always look forward to my Wednesday afternoons — they’ve become one of the most fulfilling parts of my week. I highly recommend Brian’s class to anyone interested in developing their art skills and deepening their appreciation for watercolour painting.

I have learnt about other artists and their styles, both NZ and overseas. I have found Brian to be, not only a very competent watercolourist himself,  but a competent and wonderful teacher with a vast knowledge of the subjects he sets for painting in class, as well as the artists he has chosen for the class to paint.

Mairangi Arts Centre (MAC) is a vibrant, community based visual arts education facility and exhibition venue in Mairangi Bay on the North Shore. MAC receive over 20,000 visitors annually and is one of Auckland’s largest community art centres. The Gallery Store is situated within the reception area of our main exhibition space. Our mission is to provide a platform for MAC members, and local and regional New Zealand artists to sell their handmade small scale artworks. Artists must be New Zealand residents and over 15 years old. Consignment artworks are displayed in secured glass display cases that are opened and made accessible at viewers’ requests.   

&nbsp;

Artworks considered for consignment include small scale handmade artworks, jewellery, ceramics, glass, leather, limited edition prints, or other original creations. Exceptions will be considered at the discretion of the General Manager.  

&nbsp;

The initial term of consignment for the Gallery Store is to be four months, a set block of dates made by Mairangi Arts Centre Staff. Thereafter, consignment shall continue until the artist picks up all of the artworks, or Mairangi Arts Centre requests that the artist take back any or all of the artworks with which request the artist shall comply within 30 days.   

&nbsp;

Mairangi Arts Centre is staffed 6 days a week with the exception of public holidays. The turnover of the displays after each four month period will happen on the first weekday of the month. (If this falls on a public holiday, it will be the proceeding day).  

&nbsp;

The Gallery Store consignment fee for a four month period is $20 non- members / $15 MAC members for a half shelf or $40 non-members / $30 MAC Members for a full shelf, and a 30% + GST commission for any sold works. Upon sale, a payment to the artists will be made to the artist via electronic transfer at end of the month.

&nbsp;

**Please note:** Shelf placements are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis as shelves become free when artists remove their work. Priority for current shelves is given to returning artists, and we cannot ask an artist to move from their shelf to accommodate someone new.

&nbsp;

**Application Process:**  
Please select the session, filll out the information, pay the fee and email product images to [office@mairangiarts.co.nz](mailto:office@mairangiarts.co.nz). Your consignment proposal will be considered by the manager at Mairangi Arts Centre and artists will be notified of the outcome of their application a few days after. Incomplete applications can not be considered. If your application is accepted, you will be contacted by the Manager of Mairangi Arts Centre and sent full terms and conditions. on the rare occasion your application has been denied we will entirely refund the cost of the ticket purchased.

Join ceramic artist Sylvia Sinel in the pottery studio and learn about hand building, wheel throwing and various techniques of glazing. At the end of the course, you will have a selection of functional and decorative pieces to bring home. Lots of fun is guaranteed.  

Sylvia is a ceramic artist and sculptor who has recently relocated to the area.

## FRIDAY 12:30- 3PM OR 6:30-9PM. AGES: 14+ LEVELS: BEGINNER / INTERMEDIATE

This class is mainly focused on wheel-throwing technic. In this term class, you will learn all the basics of how to use a potter’s wheel. From wedging clay, centering the clay onto the wheel, throwing, trimming, applying underglaze, and glazing it yourself. You will learn to throw the shapes of cylinder, bowl & plate, gain knowledge from the beginning to the finish, and take home your own ceramic creation! Beginners and returning student welcome.

**FRI AFT OR EVE AGES:14+~** This class is mainly focused on wheel-throwing technique. In this term class, you will learn all the basics of how to use a potter’s wheel.

Using drawing and painting as the vehicle for storytelling, you will further develop skills in drawing and colour theory to create beautiful and expressive pieces. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride into your imagination! In each class, students will receive a fun and open prompt to begin creating their own work. Emmie offers individualized guidance throughout her classes to help students grow and improve their work

Join Emmie on a fun-filled adventure into the world of comics, where imagination has no limits!

In this playful class, students will discover the magic of storytelling and sequential art. Through guided short-form projects, they’ll learn how to create their own characters, build stories, and bring them to life with words and drawings. With in class demos and individualised feedback Emmie will guide students throughout their creative process.

Perfect for complete beginner artists with a curiosity for stories, Comics Club is a space to explore creativity, develop drawing skills, and most importantly—have fun!
