TUES MORN OR AFT | 4 WEEKS | FEB OR MAR This is a class for anyone who wants to get a shorter introduction to the magic world of clay & glazing.  It is also an opportunity for someone who wants to work on their own projects under guidance by an experienced ceramic artist and tutor. The first three weeks will be focused on the three main hand building techniques pinching, coiling as well as slab work as well as have a go at wheel throwing, and the final session we’ll focus on ways of adding colours to your work through different glazing techniques.  At the end of the class you might have found a favourite technique you want to explore further.  

Sylvia is a ceramic artist and sculptor who has recently relocated to the area.

**WED** | 2 Booking Options | Have a go at handbuilding and wheel throwing to make sculptural work. 

\*\*TWO OPTIONS: MONDAY EVE & WED AFTERNOON\*\* In this class, we will learn concepts and techniques that will help us improve our portrait painting skills, using the Old Masters’ works as references. We will discuss concepts such as light, form, colour, and block-in strategies for accurate proportions & will study the characteristics of the different features and how they relate to the whole of the head. We will practice two portraits -- one in grisaille (monochrome), where there will be a strong focus on tone and form, and another using a limited palette, where we will introduce colour concepts. ## Enchanted Upcycling: Hidden Village Workshop

Join us for this unique community project to create miniature houses for a hidden village. This family friendly initiative invites ages 5 yrs+ —from master crafters to first-time tinkerers—to build and create a secret world, encouraging exploration and eco-friendly imagination.

### **The Mission**

We are foraging natural materials and collecting recyclables and transforming them into a village of miniature, **weather-resistant** homes. By using branches, air dry clay and decorative items, we’ll create durable outdoor art pieces to be hidden along our walking trail for a community-wide scavenger hunt.

### **How to Get Involved**

Participating is as easy as four simple steps:

- **Collect:** Gather recyclable materials (plastic bottles, ceramic pots) or natural items (rocks) to serve as your building blocks.
- **Create:** Use our "blueprints" to construct your unique fairy dwelling.
- **Name:** Give your house a personality! Define who lives there and what their story is.
- **Activate:** Your finished creation will be installed in our secret village for everyone to enjoy.

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of hand building while creating your own unique creatures or functional pieces such as cups and plates for everyday use.

Hand-Building For Adults with Livia Mu 

 **Prior to finalizing enrollment, You must email examples of your artworks to [info@mairnagiarts.co.nz](mailto:info@mairnagiarts.co.nz)**  This class is not for beginners. It is best suited for pupils who already possess an appreciation of the basics and wish to progress to the next level of proficiency.

Each week the challenges become greater.  They will be introduced to the work of artists who have broken new ground and challenged to emulate them. In the process Brian will demonstrate each phase of the painting whilst students follow him stroke for stroke until the painting is completed. He will demonstrate the correct value, the correct hue and the correct shape. He will do this also at the correct speed.

The emphasis is on the Alla Prima method which is the way to preserve an unadulterated picture surface.

Big brushes (preferably one stroke flats) and two pallets are required in order to preserve the quality of the picture surface.

I’ve been attending Brian’s watercolour class for about three years now. Before joining, I had only dabbled in watercolor through YouTube tutorials, but Brian’s approach is on a completely different level — professional, structured, and rooted in traditional technique.

His teaching style is very old-school in the best possible way, helping students develop solid habits from the ground up. He’s famous for his “one stroke only” rule, which trains you to be precise and prevents your paintings from becoming overworked or muddy. 

We explore a wide range of subjects, so every week feels fresh and inspiring. The group itself is also very welcoming and friendly, making the class both enjoyable and motivating.

I always look forward to my Wednesday afternoons — they’ve become one of the most fulfilling parts of my week. I highly recommend Brian’s class to anyone interested in developing their art skills and deepening their appreciation for watercolour painting.

I have attended Brian's class for 18mths now and have painted subjects I have never painted before and actually thought that I couldn't paint. I have learnt about other artists and their styles, both NZ and overseas. I joined the Mairangi Bay Art Centre approximately five years ago when I completed a drawing course and a course in acrylic art before I became interested in watercolour art.

Approximately three years ago I started a watercolour class with Brian Millard – I have completed three such courses with Brian, all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed. 

I have found Brian to be, not only a very competent watercolourist himself,  but a competent and wonderful teacher with a vast knowledge of the subjects he sets for painting in class, as well as the artists he has chosen for the class to paint.

I have enjoyed my time with Brian and have learnt much in  the art of watercolour painting with him.

Brian is incredibly passionate about art and so generous with his knowledge. Every session offers something new, from understanding composition to mastering techniques. It’s been an inspiring and rewarding journey.

I first began classes with Brian Millard in 2016 and have been with the class consistently from that time on.  I started with great trepidation but Brian's very personable and knowledgeable approach set me off in the right direction.  His 'one stroke' mantra is our guiding principle and we all strive to stay on track.  I have attended outside workshops from time to time and one of the important things I've learned is that we are extremely fortunate to have a tutor of Brian's calibre and expertise guiding us in our watercolour endeavours.   Our classes are based on the study of works by other artists and Brian's insights from his long association with the medium.  Brian selects a theme for each term and this concentrates our thinking and approach with regard to format, composition and value....all the difficult areas when it comes to producing your own work as of course, this is the goal, to encourage us to undertake our own artistic expression.  I look forward to many more classes with Brian at the helm.

There are so many ways to create a sculpture and in this class kids will learn to use a bit of innovative thinking to achieve their creative goals.

Join Emmie on a fun-filled adventure into the world of comics, where imagination has no limits!

In this playful class, students will discover the magic of storytelling and sequential art. Through guided short-form projects, they’ll learn how to create their own characters, build stories, and bring them to life with words and drawings. With in class demos and individualised feedback Emmie will guide students throughout their creative process.

Perfect for complete beginner artists with a curiosity for stories, Comics Club is a space to explore creativity, develop drawing skills, and most importantly—have fun!

Comic Clubs with Emmie Wu

Ever fascinated by the scene of the potter’s wheel work? Come to joint us for a term of wheel-throwing, and try it out yourself! In this term class, you will learn all the basics of how to use a potter’s wheel. From wedging clay, centering the clay onto the wheel, throwing, trimming, applying underglaze, and glazing it yourself. You will gain knowledge from the beginning to the finish, and take home your own ceramic creation! Beginners and returning student welcome.
