## What does this look like?

Sensory friendly hours are provided for children who may be neurodivergent (ASD, ADHD, etc.) and / or experience sensory processing differences. The space is intentionally calm, flexible and supportive- allowing each child to engage in the activity in ways that feel comfortable and meaningful to them.

Art activities have been adapted to meet a range of abilities, with options for modifying tools, materials, and expectations. Extra support is available for children who may benefit from help with sequencing, transitions, or understanding task steps while still encouraging independence and self expression.

The workshop prioritises a safe and inclusive environment where children can explore creativity without pressure. Sensory friendly adjustments, predictable routines, and a responsive and supportive approach ensure that each child can participate at their own pace, build confidence and experience success in their creativity.

## **MONDAY 7-9PM OR WEDNESDAY 12:30-3:30PM LEVEL: ALL LEVELS**

In this class, we will learn concepts and techniques that will help us improve our portrait painting skills, using the Old Masters’ works as references. We will discuss concepts such as light, form, colour, and block-in strategies for accurate proportions & will study the characteristics of the different features and how they relate to the whole of the head. We will practice two portraits -- one in grisaille (monochrome), where there will be a strong focus on tone and form, and another using a limited palette, where we will introduce colour concepts. There is also the option to work on a personal portrait if you would prefer that to an Old Master work.

*Suitable for beginners with some painting experience or intermediate artists wishing to refine their portrait techniques.*

The ability to create the illusion of space in painting is often difficult to understand, and we will be building that skillset in this class. Through step by step demonstration and in depth explanations we will paint beautiful forests on canvas.

In this hands-on workshop, children will design and build their own mini 3D garden scene using colourful pipe cleaners and decorative details. They will create a small potted plant, then craft a cute pipe cleaner puppy as its companion, with the option to personalise it with clothing, accessories, or a keychain finish. Along the way, children will choose their own colours and decorations while bringing their imaginative little worlds to life.

**TUES 7 OR 14 JUL~ AGES: 7-14** In this hands-on workshop, children will design and build their own mini 3D garden scene and animals using colourful pipe cleaners and decorative details.

Kids will be guided step-by-step through creating a fun ceramic lidded pot inspired by a slice of cake or a colourful cupcake! Using a variety of hand-building techniques, they’ll shape their pot and matching lid before decorating it with their own creative toppings like sprinkles, cherries, frosting swirls, biscuits, candy details, and more.

You will be creating a beautiful portrait piece filled with expressive mark making, inspired by the works of Dimitra Milan. Emmie will guide you through the process of mixing skin tones, mark making, and combining floral elements to capture movement and whimsy in your portraits. We will be working on canvases, with lots of demonstrations and support from Emmie.

Step behind the pottery wheel and experience the magic of making art from a spinning lump of clay! This workshop is designed specifically for ages 10–17 to "have a go" in a supportive, creative environment. No experience needed! just bring your creativity and prepare to get beautifully messy! You will learn how to center, pull, and shape spinning clay to create your very own unique ceramic bowls or cups. Perfect for beginners!

Notes: Please be noted long nails would need to be trimmed before come to the workshop, as they will "cut" into the clay. Bring an apron if you have one, or choose an old clothes you don't mind get messy.

## WEDNESDAY 1-4PM. LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED.

 **Prior to finalizing enrollment, You must email examples of your artworks to [info@mairnagiarts.co.nz](mailto:info@mairnagiarts.co.nz)**  This class is not for beginners. It is best suited for pupils who already possess an appreciation of the basics and wish to progress to the next level of proficiency.

Each week the challenges become greater.  They will be introduced to the work of artists who have broken new ground and challenged to emulate them. In the process Brian will demonstrate each phase of the painting whilst students follow him stroke for stroke until the painting is completed. He will demonstrate the correct value, the correct hue and the correct shape. He will do this also at the correct speed.

The emphasis is on the Alla Prima method which is the way to preserve an unadulterated picture surface.

Big brushes (preferably one stroke flats) and two pallets are required in order to preserve the quality of the picture surface.

I’ve been attending Brian’s watercolour class for about three years now. Before joining, I had only dabbled in watercolor through YouTube tutorials, but Brian’s approach is on a completely different level — professional, structured, and rooted in traditional technique.

His teaching style is very old-school in the best possible way, helping students develop solid habits from the ground up. He’s famous for his “one stroke only” rule, which trains you to be precise and prevents your paintings from becoming overworked or muddy. 

We explore a wide range of subjects, so every week feels fresh and inspiring. The group itself is also very welcoming and friendly, making the class both enjoyable and motivating.

I always look forward to my Wednesday afternoons — they’ve become one of the most fulfilling parts of my week. I highly recommend Brian’s class to anyone interested in developing their art skills and deepening their appreciation for watercolour painting.

I have attended Brian's class for 18mths now and have painted subjects I have never painted before and actually thought that I couldn't paint. I have learnt about other artists and their styles, both NZ and overseas. I have been challenged with new techniques, from underpainting to the final darks, painting people and buildings as subjects, as I only ever did landscapes, and using whimseys to stir the imagination. The classes have been fun, and the members all encourage each other. I have learnt a lot from Brian's demonstrations, and he encourages me to keep learning and extending myself.

I joined the Mairangi Bay Art Centre approximately five years ago when I completed a drawing course and a course in acrylic art before I became interested in watercolour art.

Approximately three years ago I started a watercolour class with Brian Millard – I have completed three such courses with Brian, all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed. 

I have found Brian to be, not only a very competent watercolourist himself,  but a competent and wonderful teacher with a vast knowledge of the subjects he sets for painting in class, as well as the artists he has chosen for the class to paint.

I have enjoyed my time with Brian and have learnt much in  the art of watercolour painting with him.

I started with great trepidation but Brian's very personable and knowledgeable approach set me off in the right direction. Our classes are based on the study of works by other artists and Brian's insights from his long association with the medium.  Brian selects a theme for each term and this concentrates our thinking and approach with regard to format, composition and value....all the difficult areas when it comes to producing your own work as of course, this is the goal, to encourage us to undertake our own artistic expression.  I look forward to many more classes with Brian at the helm.
