Designed specifically for absolute beginners, this short-term class offers the perfect hands-on introduction to working with clay. You will spend half your time working on the wheel to throw functional vessels and the other half learning essential hand-building techniques like pinching, coiling, and slab construction. Mairangi Arts Centre (MAC) is a vibrant, community based visual arts education facility and exhibition venue in Mairangi Bay on the North Shore. MAC receive over 20,000 visitors annually and is one of Auckland’s largest community art centres. The Gallery Store is situated within the reception area of our main exhibition space. Our mission is to provide a platform for MAC members, and local and regional New Zealand artists to sell their handmade small scale artworks. Artists must be New Zealand residents and over 15 years old. Consignment artworks are displayed in secured glass display cases that are opened and made accessible at viewers’ requests.   

&nbsp;

Artworks considered for consignment include small scale handmade artworks, jewellery, ceramics, glass, leather, limited edition prints, or other original creations. Exceptions will be considered at the discretion of the General Manager.  

&nbsp;

The initial term of consignment for the Gallery Store is to be four months, a set block of dates made by Mairangi Arts Centre Staff. Thereafter, consignment shall continue until the artist picks up all of the artworks, or Mairangi Arts Centre requests that the artist take back any or all of the artworks with which request the artist shall comply within 30 days.   

&nbsp;

Mairangi Arts Centre is staffed 6 days a week with the exception of public holidays. The turnover of the displays after each four month period will happen on the first weekday of the month. (If this falls on a public holiday, it will be the proceeding day).  

&nbsp;

The Gallery Store consignment fee for a four month period is $20 non- members / $15 MAC members for a half shelf or $40 non-members / $30 MAC Members for a full shelf, and a 30% + GST commission for any sold works. Upon sale, a payment to the artists will be made to the artist via electronic transfer at end of the month.

&nbsp;

**Please note:** Shelf placements are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis as shelves become free when artists remove their work. Priority for current shelves is given to returning artists, and we cannot ask an artist to move from their shelf to accommodate someone new.

## WEDNESDAY 1-4PM. LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED.

It is best suited for pupils who already possess an appreciation of the basics and wish to progress to the next level of proficiency.

Each week the challenges become greater.  They will be introduced to the work of artists who have broken new ground and challenged to emulate them. In the process Brian will demonstrate each phase of the painting whilst students follow him stroke for stroke until the painting is completed. He will demonstrate the correct value, the correct hue and the correct shape. He will do this also at the correct speed.

The emphasis is on the Alla Prima method which is the way to preserve an unadulterated picture surface.

Big brushes (preferably one stroke flats) and two pallets are required in order to preserve the quality of the picture surface.

I’ve been attending Brian’s watercolour class for about three years now. Before joining, I had only dabbled in watercolor through YouTube tutorials, but Brian’s approach is on a completely different level — professional, structured, and rooted in traditional technique.

His teaching style is very old-school in the best possible way, helping students develop solid habits from the ground up. He’s famous for his “one stroke only” rule, which trains you to be precise and prevents your paintings from becoming overworked or muddy. 

We explore a wide range of subjects, so every week feels fresh and inspiring. The group itself is also very welcoming and friendly, making the class both enjoyable and motivating.

I always look forward to my Wednesday afternoons — they’ve become one of the most fulfilling parts of my week. I highly recommend Brian’s class to anyone interested in developing their art skills and deepening their appreciation for watercolour painting.

I have learnt about other artists and their styles, both NZ and overseas. I joined the Mairangi Bay Art Centre approximately five years ago when I completed a drawing course and a course in acrylic art before I became interested in watercolour art.

Approximately three years ago I started a watercolour class with Brian Millard – I have completed three such courses with Brian, all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Design and decorate a patchwork-style lampshade using a selection of colourful fabrics, ribbons, lace and trims. Children will experiment with different patterns and textures before creating a matching animal pal to go with their finished lamp. At the end of the workshop, they’ll take home a practical handmade piece for their room and a small companion of their own.

Celebrate the colours and new life of spring in this fun, nature-inspired ceramics workshop! Kids will use the slab-building technique to construct their own vase or plant pot, learning how to shape and join clay slabs to create a functional ceramic piece.  

They’ll then transform their creation into a miniature spring garden by hand-building and adding flowers, leaves, vines, bugs and other botanical details. Kids can experiment with texture, pattern and colour to create a wonderfully unique piece inspired by everything that comes to life in spring!

Join us for a full day of pipe cleaner crafting. We’ll shape and assemble colourful flowers, leaves and stems to create an everlasting pot plant, then make a cute animal pal to sit alongside it. You’ll make up to three kitchen creations, learn more advanced hand-building techniques, then paint and decorate your pieces before they are glazed and fired. Spend the day making a collection of Halloween accessories and decorations. We’ll create a fluffy pipe cleaner puppy, design a spooky headband and finish with a matching magic wand using colourful pipe cleaners, ribbons and Halloween decorations. Children will take home three pieces that they can wear, play with and use for their Halloween celebrations.

Halloween Magic with Velora Studios

Step behind the pottery wheel and experience the magic of making art from a spinning lump of clay! This workshop is designed specifically for ages 10–17 to "have a go" in a supportive, creative environment. No experience needed! just bring your creativity and prepare to get beautifully messy! You will learn how to center, pull, and shape spinning clay to create your very own unique ceramic bowls or cups. Perfect for beginners!

Notes: Please be noted long nails would need to be trimmed before come to the workshop, as they will "cut" into the clay. Bring an apron if you have one, or choose an old clothes you don't mind get messy.

Spooky Structures & Haunted Homes with Sylvia Sinel

Get ready for some spooky clay fun in this creative Halloween ceramics workshop! Kids will learn how to use the slab-building technique to construct their very own haunted Halloween hat. They can shape, texture and decorate their hat with all sorts of creepy details—from ghosts, bats and pumpkins to spiders, spooky faces and anything else their imagination dreams up.  
  
Cut-outs can also be incorporated into the design so that, once fired, the finished hat can be used as a magical Halloween luminary. Simply place an LED tea light inside and watch the spooky details glow!

This is a fun, hands on school holiday day where kids can get absorbed in making, meet new friends and enjoy being creative away from screens. We’ll have a morning tea and lunch break with time to stretch our legs, recharge and have a chat before getting back to the clay and continuing the adventure!
